A Marriage and a Merger: The History of Cascade Eye & Skin Centers, P.C.

Cascade Eye & Skin Centers, P.C., is a large group of board-certified physicians specializing in ophthalmology, laser vision correction (LASIK), and dermatology, and it is one of the most successful medical practices in the western United States. It began as the happy result of a merger and a marriage.

In 1995, Cascade developed as a union of two leading practices in western Washington – Tacoma Eye Clinic and Eye & Skin Associates. The original Tacoma Eye Clinic had roots dating back to 1967. Three of the original Cascade Eye M.D.s – Drs. Mark Gildenhar, Dennis Drouillard, and Laurel Harris – were members of this long-established and respected group of eye surgeons. The TEC physicians got to know the doctors of another dynamic group in the south Puget Sound area, Eye & Skin Associates, and realized that they shared a common philosophy of providing high-tech, compassionate patient care.

The eye and skin connection grew from the marriage of dermatologist Barbara Fox, M.D., and ophthalmologist Leslie Fox, M.D., who decided to build a practice together. The Drs. Fox sought partners with vision, energy, and outstanding skill. They found these qualities in Drs. Larry White, eye surgeon, and Robert Findlay, dermatologist and skin pathologist. All four of these physicians spent time together in the United States Army and as resident physicians in San Francisco and later at Madigan Hospital, where they became good friends.

Today, Cascade employs 20 outstanding board-certified physicians and surgeons, an optometrist, and five physician assistants, as well as over 150 support staff. Cascade's comprehensive ophthalmology services include laser vision correction surgery (LASIK and PRK), NearVision^sm CK®, cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery, and eyelid surgery – all performed in Cascade's own surgical suite.
