Conductive Keratoplasty® – CK® Eye Surgery for Puyallup, University Place / Tacoma

Conductive Keratoplasty (CK) Eye Surgery - Cascade Eye & Skin CentersNearVisionsm CK® (Conductive Keratoplasty®) is an eye surgery designed to treat the close focusing problems of middle-age (presbyopia). For patients from University Place / Tacoma, Gig Harbor and Auburn, our eye surgeons perform Conductive Keratoplasty® at our Puyallup location to help those over forty improve their close-range vision. One of the most significant advantages of CK® eye surgery is that the procedure does not require cutting. This fact means that the procedure is quick, and recovery is speedy with very few side effects. In CK® eye surgery, the surgeon uses radio waves, rather than a blade or laser, to reshape the cornea and improve close-range focusing power.

Presbyopia

As we grow older, our near vision naturally degrades. This is called presbyopia. Even in individuals with historically good eyesight, close vision tends to degrade after age forty. The crystalline lens of the eye, which must flex to focus at close range, loses elasticity. As presbyopia develops, people tend to notice difficulty in reading or focusing on close objects. This is especially apparent in low-light conditions. Treatment options for presbyopia include reading glasses, bifocals, monovision contact lenses (one eye for distance and one eye for close), bifocal contact lenses, LASIK (in some cases), and Conductive Keratoplasty® (CK® eye surgery). CK improves near vision without the need for reading glasses or contacts.

The CK® Eye Surgery Procedure

Conductive Keratoplasty® (CK® eye surgery) is a noninvasive procedure designed to treat presbyopia. Cascade patients from University Place / Tacoma, Gig Harbor and Auburn can benefit from the quick, safe and comfortable CK® eye surgery procedure, performed at our Puyallup location.

The Conductive Keratoplasty® procedure uses radio waves to steepen the contour of the cornea. CK® eye surgery is typically performed on only one eye. After the procedure, one eye will be used for close vision, while the other eye will be used for long distances. One eye for distance, and one eye for close is called monovision, and is a very effective solution for most people. We can determine (in advance) if you can adapt to monovision. Recovery is quick, and the risks are very low.

Conductive Keratoplasty® is not a permanent fix for presbyopia because presbyopia increases with advancing age. CK® eye surgery does not cure presbyopia. It treats the symptoms and improves near vision for several years. Retreatment with CK® or another refractive procedure may be necessary to keep up with the aging process.
