Dr. Makan received his college, medical school, postgraduate specialty and fellowship training at Columbia University, State University of New York, Cornell, and Stanford in the United States, and at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. As a fourth-year medical student, he also externed at the Middlesex and Hammersmith Hospitals in London, UK, and at the University of Freiburg in Germany.

Dr. Makan practices general medical and surgical dermatology. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology and a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology. He has practiced dermatology for nearly forty years in Orange County, California, and in Bellingham, Washington.

Dr. Makan is married with three children. His hobbies include painting and deep-space astrophotography. His submission of a painting entitled “Cosmic Communication” at the 2023 Regional Illume Arts and Sports Festival in Vancouver, BC, was selected for advancement, display and adjudication at the National level in Toronto in November 2023. His paintings have also been showcased in the Artany Magazine published in the United Kingdom.
